MARIN Fast Small Ship Simulator
43 knots. No risk.
High-speed maritime craft move fast and forgive nothing. The simulator gives you the conditions without the consequences.
What we built
A hexapod motion platform carrying a full-scale RHIB cockpit. Steering wheel, throttle, ECDIS navigation, VHF radio, GPS, all in front of a 220-degree curved screen. The hydrodynamic model runs on MARIN’s XMF framework, calculating real-time physics up to 43 knots. Naval experts from the Royal Netherlands Navy calibrated every response until it felt right.
The challenge
At speeds up to 43 knots, fast craft mean rapid manoeuvres, unpredictable wave patterns and brutal physical loads. Training crews on the real thing is expensive, dangerous and a logistical headache. MARIN asked for a platform that could reproduce every nuance, slamming, broaching, surf riding, in a safe and controlled setting.
“You feel as if you are involved in a complex operation at sea. Virtual reality like this is going to play a large role in education and training. ”
