INSIDEOUT

Touring

A thunderstorm, remembered from a garden shed in Glasgow, rebuilt at 360 degrees.

INSIDEOUT is a TSC Originals installation: a 360-degree experience of video, light and sound that puts you inside a storm. It began as a childhood memory of watching thunder roll in from the safety of a garden shed in Glasgow, and grew into a room where the weather closes in around you, then breaks open.

What we built

You step into a transparent shed and turn off the light. That one action sets the storm in motion: rain drums on the roof, clouds stack up overhead, and a full thunderstorm builds around you in motion graphics and 5.1 sound. At its peak, the glass ceiling shatters, the walls fall away into moonlight, and you are left standing in the open, washed clean by the light. INSIDEOUT has traveled to more than ten destinations, among them the Palais de Tokyo and the Hamburg Triennial of Photography, and now lives in the WNDR Museum collection in the United States, alongside work by artists like Keith Haring and Yayoi Kusama.

It won bronze in the Experiential category at the Creativepool Annual Awards 2019.

The challenge

Turn a private memory, the particular fear and awe of a childhood storm, into something a stranger can walk into and feel for themselves.

People come out and immediately want to go back in. Nobody expects a thunderstorm to feel like somewhere safe.
