Introduction
How can you make engineering marvels like the world’s largest lock feel experiential and exciting for the next generation? The SHIP (Sluis Haven Information Point) Experience Center does exactly that, using immersive storytelling and interactive design to connect visitors, especially young people, with the North Sea Canal’s construction journey.
Challenges
SHIP had to transform technical, large-scale infrastructure into an engaging visitor experience that is both informative and inspiring. The goal was to educate without overwhelming, sparking curiosity and careers in the Amsterdam port region, all while ensuring the installation is durable, intuitive, and easy to maintain.
Solution
TSC used a mix of projection walls, augmented reality, video, and interactive elements to craft an environment that truly brings SHIP’s story to life. Creative video walls show real-time data, AR layers deliver context on demand, and interactive stations allow visitors to explore construction phases in-depth. The result is a storytelling hub rich in sensory detail and exploration.
Results
SHIP has become a go-to destination for learning and engagement, especially among students and families. It successfully shifts perceptions of large-scale civil engineering from distant concept to locally relevant innovation. Attendance continues strong, and the space is celebrated as a model for inspiring educational and career interest in the port’s future.
