Introduction
How do you transform maritime training into a fully immersive sensory experience? MARIN partnered with Pro Systems and The Storytelling Company to bring this vision to life through the iXfinity Immersive Room, a key innovation within the Seven Oceans Simulation Center in Wageningen.
Challenges
MARIN needed more than just a high-tech projection wall. The goal was to create a versatile environment that could:
Enable interactive storytelling and dynamic presentations
Provide immersive VR-like experiences without the need for headsets
Display live and 360° video streams from remote facilities
Accommodate group training, simulation exercises, and webinars
Offer a simple, user-friendly interface for ease of operation across teams
The challenge was to integrate all of this into a single space without compromising on usability, image quality, or adaptability.
Solution
The Storytelling Company turned the space into a dynamic training and communication hub. The room featured a three-wall projection system and high-resolution laser-touch surfaces that responded instantly to user interaction.
Rather than isolating individuals through VR headsets, the team created a shared immersive environment where teams could explore scenarios together in full visual surround. A multiview streaming system enabled real-time content from water-basin tests and remote facilities to be brought directly into the space. The room could also convert into a Traffic and Mission Control simulation environment thanks to a motorized rear wall.
For hybrid collaboration, a Microsoft Teams Room was integrated, complete with a lift-mounted camera system and a tablet-based control interface. The setup was designed to be intuitive and accessible, removing the need for technical expertise.
Results
The result is a fully immersive, headset-free space that supports training, executive storytelling, and remote collaboration all in one environment. Users can interact with complex systems in a way that feels natural and engaging.
