Introduction

RWTH Aachen’s Institute of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Building (E3D) has commissioned the iCare Perception Laboratory, a cutting-edge research facility dedicated to exploring human comfort and performance in Augmented Reality (AR) environments.

By simulating diverse environmental conditions, the laboratory enables groundbreaking research into how factors like temperature, sound, light, and virtual surroundings affect human perception and well-being.

Challenges

For a systematic research into the interplay between environmental conditions and human comfort, researchers need a controlled yet adaptable environment.

Precisely adaptable variables like temperature, humidity, and sound, combined with the integration of AR elements, required advanced technological solutions to ensure accuracy and reliability.

Solution

The iCare Laboratory’s advanced research setup was designed for flexibility and precision, with key features like

Customizable environmental conditions, enabling research into temperature, wind, sound, and light effects with adaptable surface temperature control (10°C to 50°C) and humidity control (20% - 90% relative humidity).

Applications to

  • examine the influence of color temperatures, sound levels, and virtual backgrounds on thermal perception

  • investigate the effects of lighting settings on human performance.

  • evaluate the impact of AR-enhanced video communication on indoor climate perception.

  • test innovative building automation controls and personalized conditioning interfaces.

TSC TS developed and supplied specialized climate-controlled projector enclosures to protect the equipment from extreme conditions while maintaining measurement accuracy.

Non-linear content management through a robust media server for seamless delivery and interactive AR experiences.

Results

The iCare Perception Laboratory empowers RWTH Aachen to advance knowledge into the influence of environmental factors on comfort and performance.

This research provides the data for innovative building automation and interface designs tailored to individual needs that bridge the gap between energy efficiency and human-centric, sustainable design.
